Dry needling is a skilled intervention that uses very thin needles to penetrate the skin and target deep body tissues that are normally hard to reach or feel with the hands, such as; painful knots in muscles (also known as myofascial trigger points), tendons, ligaments or even close to nerves in order to stimulate a healing response, manage pain and improve movement.
The needles used with ‘dry’ needling are solid and do not inject liquid (such as medication like an injection would) into your body. Dry needling is also different from acupuncture as its purpose is not to alter the flow of energy or “Qi” (pronounced chee) along traditional Chinese meridians. Dry needling is in fact, a modern, science-based intervention and is supported by research.
Dry needling is typically part of a larger treatment plan. Some painful musculoskeletal conditions that can be helped with dry needling include; sore or tight muscles, headaches, neck pain, shoulder pain, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, knee pain, shin splints, plantar fasciitis and low back pain.
